In this Bundesliga fixture Koln will host Mainz.
Koln are 7th with 46 points. They are still in contention for Europa League place, and could even reach 5th position which would see them entering directly into group stage. However, they don`t depend only on themselves, and could be left with nothing even with a victory here. Nevertheless, they will be highly motivated to get three points here, and will be encouraged by their recent results. They are undefeated in the last four outings, having drawn against Hoffenheim, Dortmund and Leverkusen, while beating Werder. Last time out they visited Bayer, determined to get something from the game. It started perfect for them, with Jojic scoring in 14th minute. That was the result at half-time, despite Leverkusen being a better team and threatening more. Not only that, but Koln increased their lead in 49th minute via Klunter. However, Bayer didn`t lose their faith and they have managed to level the score with Kiessling and Pohjanpalo finding net in 60th and 71st minute. The game finished 2:2, which was probably a fair reflection of what was going on on the field. Guirassy and Risse are doubtful for this game.
Mainz are 13th with 37 points. They are two points from the drop zone, having the same amount of points as Augsburg and Wolfsburg. However, they have better goal difference than both of those teams, and considering that Wolfsburg will face HSV, that means that Mainz are safe. After a crisis which saw them winning only one out of ten games, they secured their survival with a win against Frankfurt in their last outing. It was an interesting game, which was more open than what we were used to see from these teams during this season. Visitors managed to edge the first half, with Hrgota scoring in 42nd minute. Not long after the break, Seferovic sent Eintracht 2:0 up, and it seemed like a long way to go for Mainz at that point. However, they responded maginificently, and managed to level the score only twelve minutes later. Mainz continued to dominate the game, and in 76th minute Muto brought them lead, for which Frankfurt didn`t have an answer. De Blasis converted a penalty in 93rd minute to confirm hosts` victory, which will give them peace coming into the last match of the season. For Mainz, Bussman and Muller are doubtful.
Koln are coming into this game with a need for three points. Mainz, on the other hand, don`t have anything to play for, since the impossible would have to happen for them to end up being relegated. Mainz managed to pull off only two victories in the last 17 competitive games on the road, while Koln lost only two at home this season. Koln have also been looking pretty good in the last couple of games, and having a more quality team, they are clear favourites here. Mainz will come relaxed into this game, and while sometimes that can be a good thing, they will be exhausted after a tough season, relieved to survive, and therefore without much motivation. Koln won`t have issues with motivation, since they have been showing eagerness in all of their latest games. Also, the way they celebrated the second goal against Bayer looked like they`ve won Champions League and not just went 2:0 up with 40 minutes to go. With all that being said, I can`t see anything but Koln`s victory here, and will take them with a -1 asian handicap since the odds represent great value in my eyes.
