2-6 - Lost
In this Bundesliga fixture Hertha Berlin will host Bayer Leverkusen.
Hertha are 5th with 49 points. With a point here they are sure to finish at least 6th, which means Europa League qualifications, while with a win here, they will secure 5th place which leads directly into group stage. They could stay 5th even with a loss here, but that scenario is not very likely, so they will surely want to take matter into their own hands. They haven`t been in good form lately, winning four while losing seven in the last eleven outings. Last time out they beat relegated Darmstadt 2:0, which was only their third away victory of the season. Hertha started the game determined to take three points, and scored both of their goals by the 28th minute. The game slowed down since that, which was expected, with Hertha playing solid defence to preserve their lead. They didn`t allow any clear chances for Darmstadt and recorded important three points on their quest for Europe. Schieber and Skjelbred are out due to injuries, while Lustenberger is dobtful.
Bayer are 12th with 38 points. They have secured survival and can peacefully brought disasterous season to an end. They have been in terrible form lately, having managed to beat only Darmstadt in the last fourteen competitive games. Last time out they played 2:2 at home with Koln. It started bad for them, with Jojic scoring in 14th minute. That was the result at half-time, despite Leverkusen being a better team and threatening more. Not only that, but Koln managed to increase their lead in 49th, when Klunter found a net after a great solo run. However, Bayer didn`t give up and in 60th minute Kiessling pulled one back. Eleven minutes later Pohjanpalo found a net, levelling the score and bringing his team vital point needed to avoid relegation. Kampl, Bender and Volland are out injured, while Calhanoglu remains suspended.
Hertha are coming here in need of three points to secure Europa League without the need of going through qualifications, while Bayer are coming with no result imperative whatsoever. Also, there is some talk that UEFA won`t allow Leipzig to compete in the Champions League, which would mean that a 5th placed team would get a chance to get into Champions League qualifications. That would be massive for Hertha, and their motivation here shouldn`t be an issue. Hertha have been one of the best teams in the league when playing at home, winning 75% of their home games, and coming up against out-of-sorts Bayer, they should be seen as clear favourites. The setup of the game is simple: on one hand we have a team which aims to secure 5th place, at home, with almost complete squad, while on the other hand we have a team in terrible form, with no need for points, dissapointed after bad season, and missing some key players. Hertha could "choke" here and leave without a win, but common sense simply urges me to take their victory at the odds of 2.05.
